I really like Valentina's cadenza. I love how there is a definite shape to it, and it all flows well.
I do not care for the brisk tempo she takes. It sounds rushed, when I think it should feel thoughtful. Also, I do not care for the balance of the opening phrase. The melody seems very heavy.
I like the slower tempo that Daniel takes. It feels much more pensive, which I believe is the intent of the piece. In addition, I espeically like his balance - at no point do I feel like I lose the melody, or any other part.
On the other side, there are moments where he uses so much rubato that it feels like he just forgot the progression for a moment. Also, during the cadenza, it feels like he is accenting every other note, as opposed to groups of three (which is how they are grouped). There is also a moment where he adds a note, it sounds like a seventh, at 5:54. I do not approve.
The two recordings were vastly different in approach. They used greatly varying tempi to create entirely different moods. On top of that, they were both at different ends of the dynamic spectrum, Valentina a bit loud and Daniel rather soft.
With that said, it is important to note that both artists evoked intense emotion through the music. It can then be inferred that there are many different factors that go into the making of a good and meaningful performance.
